We are the future of music

We are the future of music. Or is music the future of us?
Here on this dawn of a Global community we are faced with so many influences from around the world, one may argue that there are perhaps too many influences for our lives to be even cohesive anymore, like the old adage "Too many cooks spoil the broth" our music is perhaps in danger of becoming over spiced. Or on the other hand we have the potential to create some really interesting music that was otherwise, until now, not thought of. Of course there is nothing that's new, we all know that, originality is just taking a little of what has come before and mixing it up in a new way. But now we have so much that has come before, which is now available to us, that there is bound to be some new and interesting movement in music just waiting around the next corner.
It generally seems to go that any new kind of music is a reaction against a current or previous trend, so it seems most likely to me that at some point soon music is about to become deeply spiritual and non-materialistic in its messages and tendencies. I think somewhere soon out of the small ripples in the stream will come great waves of change. But what are the implications of such changes? Will it simply be just another movement in music? or will music have the power to bring peace to the world? The Hippies of the 1960's-1970's promoted an image of peace but if you actually look closely at what they were doing they were in fact part of the downfall of peace and were the beginnings of western arrogance and so called 'Free thinking'. What Hippies were actually doing on a subconscious level was putting themselves higher than God and claiming that the road to peace was one of apathy, drug abuse, illicit sex and freedom to do what they wanted. Peace can never be built on these foundations in fact peace requires a lot of hard work and dedication, abstinence from drugs and alcohol and no illicit sex. But we all love 'sex, drugs and Rock and Roll' and why not? its so easy, so appealing so instant. If music is to create a message of peace it has to be telling its followers to be dedicated, hardworking individuals who are willing to make their lives a little harder in the short term so that they may be happier in the long term. Just take a look at most of the aged Hippies now and you will know they did not find any peace.
I envision a new music that cuts to the core of what peace and happiness really are, that doesn't tell people the easy things they want to hear but instead tells them the brutal truth, because sometimes the kindest thing to do is to tell someone something they don't want to hear. People find it hard to understand that you have their best interests at heart when you tell them that they acted arrogantly or they were rude, what they fail to see is that by telling them this you hope they will see the error of their ways and become a more humble person and in turn more happy. Here in Britain it is so commonly accepted as normal to laugh at other peoples faults that when someone is brave enough to turn around and tell them they are wrong to judge others they think you are boring or just plain sad. The truth is that they are sad for wanting to judge others in the hope it will console them in their own suffering. Furthermore if our sense of humour can only extend as far as laughing at other people for (apparently) being faulty then we have to ask some serious questions about the level of intelligence in this country.
So, to keep a reasonable amount of continuity going, the point i am trying to make is that for music to bring peaceful messages to our lives it has to be telling us to make our lives harder, to strive hard for our dreams and not just build false dreams on weak foundations, like money or possessions. The truth is that music cannot bring peace to our lives, not alone in any case. Everything our society does has to be aimed at these more difficult, but eventually more happy ways of life. Perhaps society must first adopt these principals before our music will reflect them or perhaps it is vice-versa, who can say what comes first the Chicken or the Egg?
